A day when winter truly arrived on this small island. The mercury has hovered at 5°C all day. Showers have been of the beefy variety mixed with a little hail. Unwisely we decided to hit the shops this morning. I can vouch for the hail showers, having been bombarded on several occasions. The Christmas cards have now been sent and a few more purchases made. At all the major stores security men are now once more installed checking we sanitise on entering and keep our two meter distance from others.
Last night we sat in the conservatory as the rain pounded the roof all evening. I did wonder if we might float away at one point. The temperature inside was toasty and I sat happily writing my cards and adding little notes. The Christmas cards were a lovely mix this year, purchased in a tiny National Trust shop in St David’s in Pembrokeshire. I rather like the linocut style designs. I always feel like I want to walk in landscapes like that.
So the cards are on their way and this afternoon the family received their Christmas trees. We retired folk have been delegated the job of purchasing them for all our menfolk. As soon as Jersey receives her only shipment we head to a garden centre and choose four of varying sizes. They are very good and deliver them to our home. This year they were ahead of schedule and delivered them a week earlier than we asked. Nothing like walking out of your front door one morning to find four Christmas trees in the way. Our neighbours who were just arriving thought it very amusing. Since then the trees have resided in the garden until this afternoon. Now they have been duly delivered to the family and I dare say are being decorated as I type. We on the other hand will wait another week. I don’t like to be too early, as the tree has to last in our house until twelfth night.
Being Friday our menfolk and partners will be arriving for dinner later and possibly a film on a big screen with data projector. Something we have done for some years. Desert has already been created. One of my favourites : a tiramisu cake. Not as fattening as it looks as it only has eggs and sugar whipped up with a tablespoon of espresso coffee. Admittedly there is mascarpone as a topping :)
My fourth square has just been completed and one of my favourites so far. Each day I thoroughly enjoy the act of opening my little envelope and seeing what’s inside. This one was bought in Amsterdam in a shop called Stephen and Penelope. The wool is Crazy Zauberball. I too visited the same shop on my Amsterdam trip a couple of years ago and I have a feeling I’ve sent Veggiemummy a 5 gm ball of a similar yarn from the same shop. I wonder if she has unwrapped it yet?
Well I still have dinner to cook and the cat will be reminding me very soon that he needs feeding. I’ll love you and leave you until tomorrow. Anything exciting planned for your Friday evening?
