Strongly disagree': Breast Cancer Foundation slams PM's claim screening is keeping up,

Ireland Hendry-Tennent 31/04/2022..The Prime Minister is under fire after claiming the health system is keeping up with cancer diagnoses despite COVID-19 disruptions. Speaking with AM on Monday Jacinda Ardern said cancer diagnoses are meeting expectations -  but those working on the frontline disagree.

"What they are saying at this point is that diagnoses appear to be keeping pace with what we have seen in the past," Ardern said. "In terms of screening there's a mixture of whether or not people were coming and accessing it and its availability.

I want to go away and just double check on that because the Cancer Control Agency again has highlighted that, with the exception of August last year, it has been keeping pace with what we would expect. But the Breast Cancer Foundation says that's not true and 300 women could have cancer but not know due to delays. Click here news-hub

Oxford scientists hail dementia breakthrough

Ethan Ennals For The Mail On Sunday 03/04/2022..British scientists believe they may have discovered the first effective treatment for dementia. Researchers at Neuro-Bio, a biotech firm spun out of the University of Oxford, say their potential remedy is likely to succeed where other treatments have failed because it tackles changes in the brain that have previously been ignored.

The scientists say they have identified a ‘neurotoxic’ chemical which triggers the early stages of the degenerative condition, and have developed a treatment that can neutralise it.

On Tuesday, Neuro-Bio will announce results of initial trials of the treatment involving mice, which show it to be effective. Baroness Susan Greenfield, one of the scientists behind the research, says the findings will herald a paradigm shift in treating the condition. Click here Daily mail

New research finds 'accelerating house prices were not inevitable'

Zane Small 04/04/2022..New Zealand's "prohibitively expensive" housing market could have been prevented with successful congestion-mitigation policies and less restrictive planning rules, new research has found.

The New Zealand Infrastructure Commission's new report looks at how prices and supply have changed over 90 years from the 1930s to the 2010s, to understand why New Zealand has experienced faster growth in house prices than any other OECD country.

Despite Auckland house prices dropping for the first time in two years over the last few months, the average price is still $1.55 million, according to the latest OneRoof-Valocity House Value Index. Of course, there are several factors at play. House prices shot up by 30 percent in 2021, sparked in part by historically low interest rates imposed by the Reserve Bank at the start of COVID-19 to stimulate the economy. Click here News-hub

Moana Jackson - speaking truth to power

Aaron Smale 04/04/2022..Te Moana Nui a Kiwa Jackson was a disrupter right to the end. Like his ancestors who navigated the ocean he was named after, he was always challenging conventions, rules, laws, ways of looking at things.

He’d consistently and persistently challenge the Crown for its abuse of power but he was just as capable of challenging his own. Among his last requests was one that women speak on the marae at his tangi, something that was supposedly against protocol.

His long-time colleague and friend Annette Sykes referred to him as her Ariki, the rangatira above rangatira, the highest expression of humanity. She referenced Bob Marley’s line “emancipate yourself from mental slavery” to describe the power of Moana’s work. ,. Click here News-room

Labour MP shares 'increase in gang activity' concerns days after Police Minister denies rise in gang violence

Zane Small  01/04/2022..Labour MP Helen White has shared her concerns about "an increase in gang activity" just days after Police Minister Poto Williams denied a rise in gang violence. White, who unsuccessfully ran for the Auckland Central electorate in 2020 against the Green Party's winner Chlöe Swarbrick, was elected to Parliament on Labour's list due to its massive 50 percent of the party vote.

Writing for the NZ Herald on Friday, White shared her concerns about how Auckland Central was once "a city full of international students and tourists" but "now we are faced with an increase in gang activity in the city".

"It is clear from the statistics that crime in Auckland Central has been on the rise and is changing in form. That is not surprising given the huge shock the city has been through. The ACT Party this morning gives its full support to Labour list MP Helen White

Charli XCX's slickest, polished, most refined album yet

Alex Behan 05:00, Apr 01 2022...Prior to 2019, I’d assumed she was another in a long line of interchangeable, auto-tuned singers in an oversaturated, over-produced pop market, but her self-titled album converted me. 2020 cemented my fandom when how I’m feeling now emerged mid-pandemic and opened up a whole new narrative.

What’s so striking about that record is it’s a break-up album made at home while locked down with the person she’s breaking up with. Anxiety, self-doubt and personal grief were running rampant, so she turned those emotions into a collaborative project with her fans.

Alone Together, the documentary film shot during that time shows her turn vulnerability into a superpower and embrace a more raw and ready sound. In comparison, Crash is infinitely slicker, more polished and represents her most refined work yet. . Click here Stuff news
